What's the right way to disinfect your hands?

Hand disinfection is essential for stopping infections from spreading and preventing germs from being passed on. Consequently, it is important to always disinfect your hands properly – both before and after working with a patient.

The 5 indications:

  • Before patient contact.
  • Before aseptic treatments.
  • After contact with material that could be infectious.
  • After direct contact with a patient.
  • After having contact with the patient's environment.

How to disinfect your hands correctly for surgery

The aim of surgical hand disinfection before an operation or invasive procedure is to ensure that the surgeons' hands and the hands of all staff members working in the sterile area are as clean as possible. For this purpose, staff will need to pump the disinfectant dispenser with their elbow and and apply the disinfectant to their hands and forearms up to the length of the glove shaft. The disinfectant may require between three and five minutes to take effect, depending on the manufacturer's instructions.

It is imperative to proceed according to the 'rule of 3' here:

  • First minute: Disinfect hands and forearms up to the elbow with the disinfectant solution.
  • Second minute: Disinfect your fingers, palms, wrists and forearms for one minute over the entire length of the glove.
  • In the third minute: In the final phase, particular attention should be paid to disinfecting the fingertips, nail folds and interdigital spaces.
During and after the disinfection process, you must not touch any non-disinfected sections of skin above the elbow joint. Otherwise, you will have to redo the whole disinfection process thoroughly.

Note: Scrubbing with a brush, as was standard practice in the past, is considered obsolete today because of the risk of micro-tears to the skin. Instead, keep your fingernails trimmed and make sure to disinfect them and the nail fold with a soft, germ-free nail brush before the first operation of the day.
